About the event
Talk in Finse, Norway: USA and Greenland - How did we end up here?
In June, we went to Finse in Western Norway – home to Norway’s highest railway station and surrounded by a landscape that still bore the marks of winter. Even though summer was on its way, there was still snow in the area, and several of the lakes were still covered in ice at an altitude of 1,200 meters.
Here, Anders Ibsen gave the talks "USA and Greenland - How did we end up here?" , which takes the audience back to 1867, when the USA first tried to buy Greenland. Based on history, the lecture examines the long lines of the relationship between Greenland, Denmark and the USA and provides a perspective on the geopolitical interests that characterize the debate today.
The focus was not on the day's headlines, but on the historical developments and strategic interests that, for more than 150 years, have made Greenland an area of great international importance.
As always, the questions and dialogue with the audience were an important part of the experience. The discussions ranged from Greenland's role in the Arctic to the interests of the great powers and the current challenges in the region.
Thank you to everyone who participated, contributed questions and helped create an exciting evening in the beautiful surroundings of Finse.
